RG 1/144 Unicorn Gundam — Psychoframe Transformation in Real Grade

Pulling off a full transformation in 1/144 Real Grade format is no small feat. The RG Unicorn does it with remarkable grace — expanding armor panels, shifting psychoframe, retracting visor — everything works as it should.

Transformation Mechanism

The transformation is fiddly the first time but becomes intuitive quickly. The psychoframe is cast in translucent red and genuinely glows when the surrounding white panels expand. It's one of the most satisfying transformations in all of Gunpla.

RG Unicorn: The Format's Crown Jewel

The RG Unicorn Gundam (2014) is widely regarded as one of the best Gunpla ever made at any scale. The transformation gimmick — armor flaring to expose the psychoframe between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode — was the kit that proved the RG format could match or exceed the MG line in engineering ambition.

For collectors who own one RG, this is the most common answer. For collectors who own dozens, this is often still the favorite.

The Transformation

Unicorn Mode → Destroy Mode requires manual armor manipulation across the whole figure: chest, arms, legs, wings. The process takes about 5 minutes for an experienced builder. The mechanism is internal panel hinges that allow each armor section to extend outward, exposing the molded clear pink psychoframe underneath.

The transformation is reversible — you can switch between modes any number of times without damage. The key is moving slowly and respecting the engineering. Force is the enemy.

Psychoframe Detail

The clear pink psychoframe is molded from a translucent slightly-milky plastic that diffuses ambient light naturally. Even without LEDs, you can see the psychoframe glow softly when the kit catches indoor lighting.

For full LED effect, an aftermarket LED unit (or the official Bandai LED unit, sold separately) lights the entire psychoframe internal volume. The result is dramatic — the figure appears to glow from within.

The Beam Magnum & Accessories

Beam Magnum (with magazine-feed gimmick), beam saber rack with two hilts, hyper bazooka (mounted on backpack), grenade launcher arms, and a hyper beam javelin. Comprehensive Unicorn loadout.

The hand units include articulated trigger fingers for the magnum — a small but appreciated detail.

What 2014 Engineering Looks Like

By 2026 standards, the kit is excellent but not perfect. Some panel gaps (the Destroy Mode armor doesn't fully seal). The waist transformation can loosen with repeated cycles. The wing fold-out points are slightly sticky.

None of these are dealbreakers. The kit remains the gold standard for transformable RGs.

Bandai's Tiered Releases

Several variants exist: standard RG Unicorn (Destroy Mode-capable, the main release), RG Unicorn 'Premium Unicorn Mode Box' (sealed in Unicorn Mode permanently), Banshee Norn (RG Banshee in Destroy Mode), Phenex (gold-plated, P-Bandai). All share the same mold; only colors differ.

For most builders: the standard release is the right answer. Buy variant kits only if you specifically want Banshee or Phenex on your shelf.

Display & Photography

This kit photographs beautifully. Display in Destroy Mode under directional lighting; the psychoframe glow is pronounced even without LEDs. For static shelf display, the figure stands stably without an action base. For action poses, get the official RG action base or a Kotobukiya alternative.
