RG 1/144 Freedom Gundam Ver. 2.0 — Release Date & Official Price Revealed

One of the most requested RG upgrades is finally confirmed. The RG Freedom Gundam Ver. 2.0 will launch in July 2026 at ¥4,400, featuring a complete redesign of the inner frame and revised wing system.

What's Changed

The notorious joint looseness of the original RG Freedom has been completely addressed with a new inner frame derived from the RG Destiny platform. Wing articulation is dramatically improved with individual feather segments. The overall silhouette is sleeker and closer to the anime design.

The First Real Grade Freedom Ver.2

The original RG Freedom Gundam released in 2013 was, by 2026 standards, dated. Loose joints, soft proportions, visible nub gates — it was state-of-the-art at release but the format kept advancing. The Ver.2 isn't a remold; it's a completely re-engineered kit that retires the original mold.

The improvements address every complaint about the original. The hip joints are now ratcheted. The wing binders have a new locking mechanism. The proportions are refined for modern aesthetics. And the color separation has been re-mastered with three new molded colors.

The HiRM Lineage Connection

The Ver.2 borrows engineering from the Hi-Resolution Model line — specifically, the inner frame is a derivative of the HiRM Strike Freedom's frame. This means die-cast joint elements at the hips and shoulders, providing the kind of solid, weighted feel that pure-plastic kits can't achieve.

Don't confuse this with HiRM itself — that line is ¥40,000+ kits. The Ver.2 RG borrows the engineering at a regular RG price point.

The Wing of Light Effect

The 'Wing of Light' deployable effect parts are the Ver.2's signature display feature. Two large translucent wing assemblies clip onto the back when extended in flight pose. They're segmented, articulated, and use a slight color gradient from white at the root to translucent blue at the tips.

For shelf display, the effects can be detached and stored, returning the figure to the standard 'wings folded' configuration. This is a major improvement over the original which forced you to choose between wings-deployed or wings-stowed at build time.

Pricing & Where to Buy

At ¥3,300, the Ver.2 is priced at the standard RG point — not a premium kit. This is impressive given the included die-cast parts and wing effects. Bandai's pricing decision suggests they're treating this as the new flagship of the SEED RG line, not a special edition.

Standard retail availability is confirmed; this is not P-Bandai. Pre-orders open in early Q3 2026 with shipment expected for end-Q3.

Compared to the RG Strike Freedom (2017)

The RG Strike Freedom remained the gold standard for SEED RGs through the late 2010s. The Freedom Ver.2 doesn't dethrone it for engineering; the Strike Freedom's binder system is more articulated. But the Ver.2 catches up with cleaner color separation, better proportions, and the deployable wing effect.

If you own the Strike Freedom and want the matching Freedom: this is the natural buy. If you own neither, both are excellent — the Strike Freedom is the more mechanically interesting kit; the Freedom Ver.2 is the more beginner-friendly build.

Display Recommendations

The Ver.2 was clearly designed for action display with wings deployed. Get a sturdy action base; the figure with wings extended is asymmetric and benefits from a stable support point at the lower back. The included stand handles standing display fine but flight-pose work pushes its limits.

✔ Pros

  • +Fixed original loose joints
  • +Improved wing system
  • +Better anime accuracy

✖ Cons

  • Replaces already-good original
  • Price increase from original
