HGUC 1/144 Unicorn Gundam [Destroy Mode] — The Iconic White Devil

The HGUC Unicorn Gundam Destroy Mode remains one of the best value HGUC kits ever produced. The red psychoframe against brilliant white armor is one of the most striking color schemes in Gunpla history, and this kit captures it perfectly.

Psychoframe Detail

Molded in translucent red, the psychoframe parts glow when backlit. No painting required for the iconic look. The horn splits correctly into the destroy mode configuration and the panel detail across the armor is exceptional for a 1/144 HG.

The HGUC Unicorn Destroy: Late-Mold Strength

The HGUC RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) is the standard 1/144 representation of Banagher's unleashed Unicorn. Released in 2010 as part of the Gundam UC anime tie-in, it benefited from Bandai's then-recent investment in HGUC engineering — better joints than the older HGUCs, smarter color separation, and a competent inner frame.

What you don't get: the transformation gimmick. This kit is permanently in Destroy Mode (armor flared, psychoframe exposed). For Unicorn Mode, you need either the separate Unicorn Mode kit or the dual-pack with both modes.

The Psycho Frame Treatment

The kit's signature feature is the molded clear pink psychoframe panels visible through the deployed armor gaps. Light passes through these panels naturally, giving a subtle glow effect even without LEDs. With a small LED unit (sold separately), the effect becomes dramatic — the kit lights up internally with the iconic Newtype psychoframe glow.

The clear pink is a translucent, slightly milky color rather than transparent. This actually helps — it diffuses light evenly rather than concentrating it at the LED source.

Beam Magnum Engineering

The Beam Magnum (Unicorn's signature weapon) is included with the kit, in proper proportions and with the magazine-feed gimmick (the magazine slides into the bottom of the rifle and is removable for reload-pose display). The beam saber rack and two saber hilts are also included.

What's missing compared to the MG version: the over-the-shoulder magazine reload pose effect parts. Those would have been a nice touch but are absent at HG scale.

Articulation Quality

For a 2010 HGUC, the articulation is excellent. Hip ball joints, double-hinge knees, ankle pivots, and a clean shoulder rotation. The waist twists about 30 degrees. The neck has full rotation.

The only weak spot is the ankle joint — it can loosen with extensive posing. A small dab of clear nail polish on the friction surface solves it.

Why Buy This in 2026?

Three reasons: it's the cheapest 1/144 Unicorn Gundam available, it's a benchmark for HGUC engineering, and it's small enough to work in displays where the RG or MG would dominate.

If you have shelf space, the RG Unicorn is the better kit. If you have ¥1,500 to spend, the HGUC is fantastic value.

Variants Worth Knowing

The 'Banshee' (HGUC) is the same mold in black-and-yellow. The 'Phenex' (HGUC) is gold-plated and a P-Bandai exclusive. The standard, Banshee, and Phenex make a nice three-figure 'RX-0 line' display.
