The HG Calibarn is the Best Witch from Mercury Kit. Not Even Close.
The Aerial gets all the attention. It was first, it's the protagonist's kit, it has the iconic translucent GUND-bit wings. I completely understand the love for it. But after building every major WFM HG release, the Calibarn lives on a different tier.
A Design That Shouldn't Work โ But Does
The Calibarn looks almost hostile when you first see it. No soft curves, no elegant proportions โ it's angular, asymmetric in places, weirdly proportioned in ways that somehow look intentional rather than awkward. This is a mobile suit designed by someone trying to make something unsettling, and Bandai translated that design into plastic with almost no compromises.
In hand, it's one of the most striking HGs I've ever held. The dark red and gray color scheme photographs beautifully and the angular detail rewards close inspection.
The Build
More complex than a standard HG, but not in an annoying way โ in a "this kit earns its complexity" way. The bit stave effects are translucent, individually poseable, and look spectacular in any configuration. The articulation is modern WFM-era quality: deep knee bends, good wrist range, stable ankle joints.
No significant parts count complaints. Nothing feels rushed or simplified. For a ยฅ2,750 kit this level of quality is genuinely remarkable.
Display Presence
Put the Calibarn next to the Aerial and the Aerial Rebuild and the Calibarn immediately becomes the focal point of the group. Its silhouette is just that distinct. If you're building a WFM shelf โ and you should be โ this is the centerpiece.
For $30, the Calibarn is one of the best value propositions in modern HG. I'd recommend it even to people who haven't seen WFM.
The HG Calibarn: WFM's Hero Final Form
The HG Calibarn (2023) is the final form of Suletta's mobile suit in Witch from Mercury โ the Aerial's evolved configuration with integrated weapons and refined GUND-bit system. The Calibarn captures the show's climactic visual aesthetic.
For WFM fans completing the Suletta trio (Aerial โ Aerial Rebuild โ Calibarn), this kit is essential.
The Refined GUND-bit System
The Calibarn's bit shield evolves the Aerial's design. The Calibarn includes 14 deployable bits (vs the Aerial's 11), with refined effect parts and improved deploy positions. The bits clip into the shield via tiny pegs and detach for combat-pose display.
The Color Scheme
Brighter white than the Aerial, with deeper red accents and more dramatic gold trim. The Calibarn reads as 'evolved hero' โ the same lineage as the Aerial but with refined aesthetic refinements.
The Build
3-4 hours for a careful first build. WFM-tier complexity โ modern HG engineering, no surprising challenges.
Articulation
Excellent. The Calibarn supports the wide range of WFM combat poses โ kneeling shots, mid-flight poses, beam-deployment configurations.
Display Recommendation
The Calibarn looks best with bits deployed in defensive 'fan' configuration, beam weapon held forward, slightly crouched stance. The combination evokes the show's most iconic moments.
For dedicated WFM fans, build an entire Suletta-era shelf: Aerial โ Aerial Rebuild โ Calibarn. Total cost: ~ยฅ6,000-7,000. Tells the complete narrative.
