RG 1/144 Crossbone Gundam X1 — Pirate Gundam Done Perfect

The RG Crossbone X1 is a gift to fans of the classic manga. The pirate aesthetic — skull decals, beam zanbers, cloth anti-beam cloak — is all present and the inner frame gives the compact design a surprising range of motion.

RG Crossbone Gundam X1: The Pirate Gundam

The RG Crossbone Gundam X1 (2018) brings Tobia Arronax's pirate-themed mobile suit from Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam to Real Grade scale. The Crossbone is unique among Gundams — it's piloted by space pirates fighting against the Earth Federation, with a distinctive black-and-skull aesthetic.

For collectors who want a 'different' Gundam, the Crossbone is essential. There's no MG Crossbone X1 in standard release; the RG is the apex 1/100-equivalent representation.

The Pirate Aesthetic

The Crossbone's design language is space-pirate — black armor with white skull motifs on the chest, ankle, and shoulder. The aesthetic is dramatic and theatrical, distinct from typical Gundam color schemes.

The skull markings are properly molded (not stickered). The clean black plastic and crisp white skull patterns are striking on display.

The Beam Zanber & Heat Daggers

The Crossbone's signature weapons are the Beam Zanber (large beam saber) and the heat daggers (smaller swords stored in the legs). Plus a beam rifle for ranged combat.

The kit includes all weapons plus mounting hardpoints. The heat daggers store on the legs for stowed display, deployed for combat-pose display.

The X1 Variants

Several Crossbone variants exist: X1 (standard), X1 Full Cloth (with armor cape), X1 Kai, X2, X3. Each represents different points in the manga. The standard X1 RG is the entry point.

The X1 Full Cloth has the dramatic 'cape' configuration — the X1 with a black-and-skull armor cape draped over the shoulders. Visually impressive but more complex build.

Articulation

2018-era RG engineering. The Crossbone's combat style emphasizes acrobatic sword-fighting and high-speed mobility. The RG accommodates these poses — strong shoulder articulation for sword swings, deep knee bends for crouching, smooth waist rotation.

Why Build the Crossbone

Three reasons: the unique pirate aesthetic, the manga's cult following, and the visual impact of black-and-white skull motifs against typical Gunpla shelf colors. The kit stands out on any display.
