PG 1/60 Strike Freedom Gundam — The Ultimate SEED Kit in Perfect Grade

The Perfect Grade Strike Freedom is a monument to Gunpla engineering. Over 580 parts, a fully die-cast inner frame with gold-plated sections, eight fully articulated DRAGOON units, and a wing span that fills an entire shelf. This is the pinnacle of SEED kit-making.

The Inner Frame

The PG inner frame is partially die-cast metal — you feel the weight and solidity instantly. The gold-plated sections aren't paint; they're vacuum metallized plastic that genuinely gleams under any lighting. Combined with the articulated joint system, every pose holds perfectly.

PG Strike Freedom: SEED's Apex

The PG Strike Freedom (2008) is one of Bandai's most ambitious Perfect Grade releases. It captures the multi-wing Strike Freedom in 1/60 scale with engineering that includes individually articulated wing binders, motorized wing deployment options, and full beam-effect part inclusion.

For SEED diehards, this is the apex Strike Freedom kit. There's no MGEX Strike Freedom (yet); the PG remains the format's pinnacle.

The Wing System at PG Scale

The PG version includes 16 wing binders per side, each individually articulated on a multi-pivot mount. The wings deploy in stages: closed (resting), half-open (combat ready), fully deployed (full burst), or independent positions per wing for irregular configurations.

The wing root mounts use ratcheted detents at common positions plus continuous range between detents. The result: wings stay where you put them but you can fine-tune positions.

The 'Lightning Edition' Variant

Bandai released a 'PG Strike Freedom Lightning Edition' that adds clear-translucent armor panels and motorized rotating wing functionality. The base kit doesn't have these features; the Lightning Edition is a more theatrical display kit.

For most builders, the standard PG is the right answer. The Lightning Edition is a luxury display piece for serious SEED collectors.

The Inner Frame & Detail

Full PG-class internal frame with multi-axis hip joints, ball-jointed shoulders with three-position rotation locks, double-jointed knees with friction settings, and ankle pivots accommodating extreme kneeling poses.

The chest crystal is mounted on a clear plastic backing with internal detail visible through the translucent crystal. Adding a small LED behind the crystal creates a subtle 'reactor glow' effect.

Build Time & Difficulty

This is a 30-50 hour build for an experienced builder. The wing assembly alone consumes 8-15 hours due to the 32 individual wing binders. Plan multiple weeks of evening work; speed-building leads to errors that cost more time to fix than they saved.

Recommended for builders who have completed at least two prior PG kits. The Strike Freedom's complexity assumes baseline PG-build experience.

Display Real Estate

Fully deployed with all wings spread, the PG Strike Freedom occupies approximately 60cm × 60cm × 80cm (height with wings vertical). Plan shelf space accordingly. Standard cabinets won't accommodate; you'll need a dedicated display case or open shelf with significant clearance.

The kit's weight (with full weapons and effects) approaches 2kg. Any action base needs serious load capacity. Bandai's 'Black Stand' or aftermarket Kotobukiya alternatives are recommended.

Pricing Reality

Standard PG Strike Freedom: ¥21,000. Lightning Edition: ¥38,000. Plus action base, plus paint or polish work, plus display case — total investment for a finished display piece typically runs ¥30,000-¥50,000.

This is a serious commitment. If you're new to Gunpla and considering a PG, build at least one MG first to understand whether the format suits your patience and budget.
