MG Strike Freedom: Seven Years Later, Still the King of the SEED MGs.

MG Strike Freedom: Seven Years Later, Still the King of the SEED MGs.

I built the MG Strike Freedom for the first time in 2019. I've built it twice more since then — once for a friend as a gift, once because my first one got damaged in a move. Every single time, the experience is exactly as good as I remember. That consistency across years is the mark of a truly great kit.

The Gold Frame Argument

Some people hate the gold frame. Too flashy, too "extra," too Kira Yamato. Those people are wrong and I won't be taking questions. The gold inner frame of the Strike Freedom is one of Bandai's most inspired choices at the MG level. When the blue and white armor panels go on over it and small glimpses of gold peek through the joints — it looks alive in a way most kits don't.

It's theatrical. It's maximalist. It's perfect for this specific mobile suit. And it photographs unbelievably well.

The DRAGOON System

Eight individually articulated DRAGOON wings, each with its own mounting joint. Full spread position makes this one of the largest display footprints of any MG on the market. You need shelf space for this — real shelf space, not the "oh I'll make it fit" kind of shelf space.

Each DRAGOON also has beam effect parts. Setting up the full extended DRAGOON display takes about 20 minutes and looks like a Gunpla magazine cover. Totally worth it.

Why It Still Holds Up

Newer SEED kits have released since — the MG Destiny, the MG Freedom 2.0, eventually we'll get an updated Strike Freedom. But the original MG Strike Freedom hit something that's genuinely hard to improve: the balance between complexity, visual drama, and build enjoyment. Nothing about the build feels like a chore. The gold frame makes every assembly step feel significant. And the result is one of the most striking kits you can own at any price.

Seven years of shelf life and it still stops people in their tracks. That's the test.

MG Strike Freedom: Beyond the Build

This is a personal reflection on the MG Strike Freedom Full Burst — what the kit teaches you that the manual doesn't.

What the Build Reveals

Building this kit teaches patience. The wing assembly alone — 32 individual binders, each requiring careful subassembly — demands focus that most other Gunpla don't require. By the end, you'll understand pacing in a way that improves every subsequent build.

The Display Decisions

Where to display the Strike Freedom Full Burst is itself a question. The footprint with all wings deployed approaches 30cm × 30cm. Most shelves can't accommodate this. You'll either dedicate a shelf section, invest in a display case, or display in 'wings stowed' mode for a smaller footprint.

The Lighting Question

This kit photographs better than it displays under typical room lighting. The gold trim, metallic blue armor, and clear pink chest crystal all benefit from directional lighting that most homes don't provide.

For dedicated display, invest in a small spotlight or LED strip. The transformation is dramatic.

The 'Best MG SF' Question

MG Strike Freedom (standard): excellent. MG Strike Freedom Full Burst Mode: excellent + dramatic effect parts. MG Strike Freedom Ver.MB (Master Builder edition): excellent + premium finish. PG Strike Freedom: ultimate but ¥21,000.

For most collectors, the Full Burst Mode is the right choice. The effects are dramatic; the build is satisfying; the price is justified.

The Conversation Piece

This kit invites attention. Visitors notice it. Casual viewers ask about it. The combination of size, color, and dynamic display makes the Strike Freedom Full Burst a centerpiece — not just on a Gunpla shelf, but in any room where it lives.
