MG Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex Announced — Iron-Blooded Orphans Joins Master Grade
The announcement IBO fans have been waiting years for is finally here. Bandai has officially confirmed the MG 1/100 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex, the final form of Mikazuki Augus's iconic mobile suit.
Features Confirmed
Full inner frame based on the Gundam Frame structure. All signature weapons included: Ultra-Large Mace, Twin Mace, and the razor-sharp Tail Blade with 7-joint flexibility. Unique die-cast joint elements for Ahab Reactor sections. Release scheduled for August 2026.
Why This Announcement Matters to IBO Fans
Iron-Blooded Orphans aired in 2015-2017 and produced some of the most memorable Mobile Suit designs of the modern era. The franchise got HG and Full Mechanics 1/100 kits at the time, but Master Grade releases lagged badly — until this announcement. The MG Lupus Rex is the third MG IBO release (after Barbatos and Barbatos Lupus), and it represents Bandai's commitment to the IBO library long after the show ended.
For IBO fans who waited a decade for an MG of Mikazuki's final form, this is a vindication moment. The line art has been ready since 2017; the engineering had to catch up.
The Tail Blade & Inner Frame Promises
Bandai's PR claims the Lupus Rex's tail blade will feature 'seven-joint flexibility' — meaning seven articulated segments that allow it to coil and strike convincingly. If true, this would be the most articulated single weapon in any MG to date. The reference here is the MG Strike Freedom's wing binders (5 articulation points each), which the tail would exceed.
The inner frame is described as a development of the Gundam Frame system used across IBO. Expect a full rib-cage chest assembly with reactor cores, exposed neck linkages, and a hip frame that telegraphs the IBO 'unsealed' aesthetic.
Weapons in the Box
Confirmed inclusions: the Ultra-Large Mace (the iconic over-the-shoulder weapon), the Twin Mace (close-combat duo), the Tail Blade (the show-stealer), and the 300mm Cannon (mounted on the back). All weapons are expected to use removable hardpoint mounts, allowing pose changes without disassembly.
The mace is reportedly modeled with metal weighting in the head — the weight distribution would otherwise force the figure to lean, so internal counterweights solve a chronic IBO MG problem.
Color Separation Concerns
The Lupus Rex's color scheme is dominated by white and dark blue, with red trim. The MG Barbatos (2017) had occasional color separation issues — sticker reliance for the head intakes, paint required for the mid-armor red panels. Whether the Lupus Rex addresses these remains to be seen at the kit's release.
Builders should expect to do a small amount of paint work on the red mid-armor accents regardless. Bandai has historically saved their best color separation for UC kits and let later AU lines fend with stickers.
Pricing & Availability
The announced retail price is ¥7,150, putting it in the upper bracket for an MG. The base MG Barbatos was ¥5,400; the Lupus is ¥6,600. The Lupus Rex's premium reflects its added weapons mass and the tail-blade engineering.
Release is scheduled for August 2026. Pre-orders are expected to open in May. P-Bandai exclusivity has not been confirmed; current indications suggest a standard retail release. Either way, day-one stock will likely sell quickly given the franchise's enthusiastic fanbase.
Display Considerations
This kit will be a presence piece. Combined weight (kit plus weapons plus tail blade plus mace) will likely exceed 800g — heavier than the standard MG Barbatos. Plan your stand and shelf accordingly. The action base will need to support the figure plus the cantilevered tail and mace; the included stand may be insufficient for dynamic poses.
If you can choose, display this with the tail in striking pose, mace raised, and the cannon mounted. Static parade-stance display undersells the design.
✔ Pros
- +All signature weapons included
- +Die-cast Ahab Reactor joints
- +Full articulated tail blade
✖ Cons
- −No LED option
- −August 2026 feels too far away
