MG 1/100 Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka — A Timeless Masterpiece

The MG Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka is the kit that convinced an entire generation to take Gunpla seriously. Katoki's redesign elevated what was already an iconic machine into something transcendent, and the Master Grade kit captures every detail.

The Wings

Twelve individual wing feathers per side, each molded in pure white with subtle surface texture. When fully spread, the wingspan nearly doubles the kit's width. It's one of the most dramatic display poses in all of Gunpla.

MG Wing Zero EW Ver.Ka: The Definitive Wing

The MG Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka (2018) is the most refined Master Grade of the Wing Zero design. The 'EW' designation refers to the Endless Waltz movie's redesign with feathered wings; the 'Ver.Ka' designation means Hajime Katoki personally signed off on the proportions.

For Wing Zero fans, this is the ultimate 1/100 kit. There's no MG release that surpasses it in engineering or aesthetic.

The Feathered Wing System

The signature feature: 14 individually articulated feathers per wing pair, mounted on a multi-pivot wing root. Each feather has a hinge point allowing fold-up or deploy positions. The result is a wing system that creates genuinely dramatic 'angel wing' silhouettes for display.

The feathers are thin and lightweight, so the wings can hold extreme deployed configurations without sagging. The pivot points use ratcheted detents — set the wings, and they hold.

The Twin Buster Rifle

The Twin Buster Rifle is included as a single combined weapon (the show's primary weapon). It can also be split into two separate rifles for dual-wield poses. The connecting joint uses a magnetic clamp rather than friction fit, allowing for repeated split/combine cycles without wear.

The rifle has a forward-folding stock and a flip-out targeting sight. Small details that wouldn't survive at smaller scales but elevate the MG presentation.

The Pure White Plastic

The kit's white plastic has been re-mastered specifically for this release. It has a faint mother-of-pearl shimmer under direct light, evoking the angelic aesthetic without resorting to paint or coatings.

The blue accents are deeper than older MGs — closer to a true navy than the lighter blues of earlier releases. The contrast against the white is striking.

Articulation

Standard 2018-era MG articulation. Hip ball joints with full range, double-hinge knees that bend past 130 degrees, ankle pivots that accommodate kneeling poses, and a swivel waist with roll-yaw range.

The wings can deploy fully without restricting body articulation — a significant engineering achievement given the wing weight.

Build Considerations

The wing assembly is the most time-consuming part of the build — 28 small feather units that each require two parts. Plan 8-12 hours total for a careful first build. The body itself goes together quickly.

This is a kit best built across two evenings. Trying to power through in one session leads to fatigue and mistakes during the wing assembly.

The Premium Price Tag

At ¥6,800, this is at the top end of standard MG pricing. For Wing Zero diehards, the premium is justified by the engineering. For casual builders, the standard MG Wing Zero (non-Ver.Ka) is still excellent at ¥5,400.

The Ver.Ka difference: refined proportions, the deployable wing-of-light effect parts, and the gold-finish wing roots. None of these are essential, but they make the kit feel like a finished display piece rather than a starter.

Display Recommendations

This kit demands action display. Static parade-stance underutilizes the wings. Get an action base (the included stand is functional but not premium), pose with wings half-deployed and Twin Buster Rifle aimed forward, and light from above. The white plastic and gold trim catch light dramatically.
