MG 1/100 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka — The Golden Standard of Master Grade

MG 1/100 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka — The Golden Standard of Master Grade

There are few builds in Gunpla as satisfying as the MG Unicorn Ver.Ka. Over 16 hours across multiple sessions, this kit rewards your patience with one of the most impressive finished pieces you'll ever display.

Psychoframe at 1/100

Every psychoframe section — chest, shoulders, legs, skirt — is cast in translucent red and fully expands in destroy mode. The transformation reveals layer after layer of crimson light-collecting plastic. It's genuinely spectacular.

MG Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka: The Original Refined

The MG Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (2009, re-released since) was Bandai's first Master Grade Unicorn — and remains a benchmark for transformable MGs. The Ver.Ka designation refers to Hajime Katoki's involvement in tightening the proportions.

If the Ver.Ka feels older than other entries on your shelf, that's because it is. Bandai released the standard MG Unicorn (non-Ver.Ka) in 2014, the MGEX in 2020, and the Ver.Ka 2.0 is rumored for late 2026. The original Ver.Ka remains in production as the value option.

The Transformation

Unicorn Mode → Destroy Mode requires manual armor extension across the whole figure. The mechanism uses internal hinges that swing each armor panel outward, exposing the clear pink psychoframe beneath. Total transformation time: ~10 minutes.

The mechanism on the Ver.Ka is solid but shows its age. Compared to the MGEX (released 2020), the Ver.Ka has slightly more visible panel gaps in Destroy Mode. The MGEX hides them better. For most viewers and at normal display distance, this isn't visible.

Psycho Frame Treatment

Translucent pink plastic, slightly milky for natural light diffusion. Without LEDs, the psychoframe shows soft glow under indoor lighting. With the Bandai LED unit (sold separately), the entire internal volume lights up — dramatic and theatrical.

For maximum effect: install the LED, display in Destroy Mode, position under a desk lamp. The combination of internal LED and external lamp creates a 'hovering' luminous quality.

Weapons & Accessories

Beam Magnum (with three magazines and shoulder hardpoint mount), beam saber rack with two hilts, hyper bazooka (over-shoulder mount), beam saber dual-handle (shorter blades), and grenade-launcher armed gauntlets.

The hand units include open palms, closed grips, and articulated trigger fingers for the Magnum. Standard MG accessory complement.

What's Held Up Over Years

The proportions. The Ver.Ka was a Katoki design exercise; the body proportions remain crisp by 2026 standards. The face sculpt is excellent — no need for replacement parts.

The basic articulation. Standard ball joints, double-hinge knees, swivel waist. All function correctly even after years of pose cycling.

What Newer Kits Improve On

The MGEX Unicorn (2020) is the apex of MG Unicorn engineering. Better psychoframe diffusion, cleaner Destroy Mode armor seal, more articulation. Costs roughly 4x the Ver.Ka.

The standard MG Unicorn Ver.2 (2014) updated some details but kept the price moderate. It's the middle option.

Buying Recommendation

If your budget is ¥5,500: the MG Unicorn Ver.Ka. Solid kit, the Unicorn presence on your shelf for moderate cost.

If your budget is ¥10,000+: skip to the MGEX. The engineering is meaningfully better and the LED-ready design saves the aftermarket cost.

If you're in between: wait for the rumored Ver.Ka 2.0 (late 2026). Bandai has hinted at a refresh.
