MG 1/100 Gelgoog Ver. 2.0 — Zeon's Finest MS Finally Done Justice
The Gelgoog is the mobile suit that could have beaten the RX-78-2 if only it arrived sooner. In Master Grade Ver. 2.0 form, it finally gets the engineering treatment it deserves — complete inner frame, superb articulation, and that magnificent beam naginata.
Ver. 2.0 Articulation
The Ver. 2.0 inner frame gives the Gelgoog a range of motion that completely transforms its display potential. The beam naginata can be posed in all manner of dynamic slashing stances, and the knee bend nearly matches the RX-78-2 Ver. 3.0.
MG Char's Gelgoog Ver.2.0: The Ace Mass-Production Suit
Char Aznable's red Gelgoog is the One Year War's most iconic mass-production MS — fielded by an ace pilot, painted in the red colors that mark Char's flagship suits. The MG Char's Gelgoog Ver.2.0 (2008) is Bandai's modernized version of the original 1996 MG release.
For Char fans completing the trio of Char's signature MS (Zaku II, Gelgoog, Sazabi), this is the essential middle entry.
What 'Ver.2.0' Means Here
The Ver.2.0 designation indicates a complete mold redesign rather than a minor refresh. New inner frame, new proportions (slightly more refined), new color separation, and new accessory loadout. The original 1996 MG Gelgoog is essentially obsolete by comparison.
The Ver.2.0 introduced the Char's Counterattack-style 'Newtype Hatch' chest gimmick (the chest panel slides open to reveal the cockpit), a feature absent on the original.
The Inner Frame
The Ver.2.0 frame is a refined version of the Char's Zaku II Ver.2.0 frame. Both share architectural similarities (joint placements, polycap arrangements). For builders who own both, the family resemblance is visible.
Hip ball joints with full range, double-hinge knees, swivel waist, ball-jointed shoulders. Standard for the Ver.2.0 era.
Beam Naginata & Beam Rifle
The signature Gelgoog Beam Naginata (dual-bladed staff) is included as a single combined weapon plus separate component pieces. The beam rifle is a classic Gelgoog rifle with detachable magazine. Two beam saber hilts mount on the backpack.
The naginata can be displayed combined or split into two separate single-blade beam sabers — flexibility appropriate to the show's combat sequences.
The Color Scheme
Char's signature red, with gray inner frame, white accents, and gold trim. The red is a deeper crimson than most red MG kits — closer to wine red than primary red. The gold is painted, not plated; a Mr Color Super Gold over-coat is recommended.
The chest panel has visible cockpit detail underneath when opened, including a small molded pilot figure. A small drybrush brings out the cockpit detail.
Build Difficulty
About 8-10 hours for a careful first build. The naginata assembly is the most fiddly part; the body builds straightforwardly.
Decals (water-slide) are included for unit insignia and Newtype warning markings. Application is straightforward and adds significant visual richness.
The Gelgoog Trio
Bandai released three Gelgoog variants in the Ver.2.0 era: Char's Gelgoog (red), the standard Gelgoog (green production version), and the Gelgoog Marine (P-Bandai, yellow/green). Collectors building a Zeon mass-production shelf can collect all three.
The Char version is the iconic display piece; the standard and Marine variants work as supporting figures.
