HGUC 1/144 Zaku II (MS-06F) — The Iconic Zeon Workhorse Reviewed

The Zaku II needs no introduction. Arguably the most famous mobile suit design ever created, the HGUC treatment gives it the respect it deserves with clean molding, solid joints, and that unmistakable mono-eye visor.

Mono-Eye Magic

The translucent green mono-eye is beautifully rendered. Combined with the military-green armor, spiked shoulder, and machine gun accessories, the HGUC Zaku II is pure Zeon intimidation on a shelf.

The HGUC Zaku II: The Eternal Grunt

The Zaku II is the most-built mobile suit in Gunpla history. There are HG, MG, RG, PG, and SD versions. There are dozens of color variants. There are full custom-paint guides published in books. The HGUC version is one of the cleanest 1/144 representations available.

This particular HGUC release (2007) replaced an even older HG mold and remains the standard 1/144 Zaku II reference for the UC era.

Why Zakus Are the Beginner's Sweet Spot

Zaku II is forgiving to build. Few small parts. Logical assembly order. Standard color scheme. Easy to paint, easy to weather, easy to customize. If you ever wanted to try modifications — kitbashing, custom paint, weathering — start with a Zaku II. There's no judgment for experimentation on a kit this iconic.

The downside: there are so many Zakus already on shelves that yours needs to bring something to feel distinctive. Custom colors or weathering are usually the answer.

Articulation

Standard 2007-era HG articulation. Ball-jointed shoulders, single-hinge elbows, hip ball joints, knee bends to about 90 degrees. The signature monoeye head turns smoothly via a polycap. The waist is fixed (no twist).

For modern dynamic poses, the Zaku II MG Ver.2.0 is a better choice. For static parade-stance display or quick poses, the HGUC works fine.

Color Variants You Can Choose

Standard green Zaku, Char's red Zaku II, the Black Tri-Stars purple Zaku, the desert tan Zaku — Bandai has released essentially every famous color variant as a separate HGUC kit. Each is the same mold with different molded colors and decals.

For collectors, building 'a squad' of Zakus in different colors creates an excellent themed display.

Weapons Loadout

The basic Zaku II includes the Zaku Machine Gun, the Heat Hawk axe, two grenades, and the Zaku Bazooka. The Char variant adds the dedicated heat saber. Different variants have different weapon loadouts.

The hands are basic C-grip claws — adequate but not ideal for action poses. Builders Parts hand replacements are a popular upgrade.

The Customization Canvas

This is the kit to practice modifications on. Try: custom color schemes, decal schemes (apply unit insignia from your imagination), weathering passes (chipping, sand-streaking, rust), and panel-line styles. Every technique you'd use on a more expensive kit can be tried on a Zaku at low cost.
