HGCE 1/144 Destiny Gundam — SEED's Dark Rival in Modern Form

The 2022 HGCE Destiny Gundam completely redeems the original 2004 kit. New proportions, better joint quality, improved wing articulation and proper color separation make this one of the best HGCE remakes ever released.

HGCE Destiny: SEED's Dark Counter-Hero

The HGCE Destiny Gundam (2022) is the modernized Destiny — Shinn Asuka's mobile suit from Gundam SEED Destiny. This is the show's primary protagonist mecha through the second half of Destiny, characterized by its 'Wings of Light' deployment system and aggressive combat aesthetic.

For SEED Destiny fans, the HGCE represents the modernized version of a kit that previously released as the older HG SEED. The HGCE has updated proportions, articulation, and color separation.

The Wings of Light System

The Destiny's signature feature is the deployable 'Wings of Light' — large translucent wings that extend from the back during high-speed flight. The HGCE kit includes optional clear wing effect parts that mount on the back.

The wings can be displayed deployed (clear effect parts mounted) or stowed (effect parts removed). For static shelf display, removing the wings makes the figure smaller and easier to position.

The Anti-Beam Shield

The Destiny carries an anti-beam shield on the left wrist. The shield can deploy a beam shield projection — captured in the HGCE with effect parts.

The High-Energy Beam Rifle & Sword

The Destiny's beam rifle is unusual — high-energy variant with extended barrel and a forward-mounted scope. Plus the iconic 'Excalibur' anti-ship sword (massive blade) and beam saber alternates.

The Excalibur is heavy at HG scale; the figure leans slightly when displayed with the sword extended forward. An action base helps.

Color Scheme

Black, white, blue, and red. The Destiny uses higher contrast colors than typical Gundams — the black sections are deeper, the white is brighter. The visual effect is more aggressive.

The HGCE Refresh Question

If you own the older HG SEED Destiny: the HGCE is meaningfully better — better articulation, better color separation, refined proportions. Worth the upgrade for serious Destiny fans.

If you don't own any Destiny: the HGCE is the right starting point. The original HG SEED is still available but inferior.

✔ Pros

  • +Massive improvement over original
  • +Spectacular wings
  • +Excellent joint quality
  • +Perfect SEED proportions

✖ Cons

  • Wings heavy for HG
  • Some stickers on beam boomerangs
  • Needs display stand
  • Light gray areas need painting
