SD BB Senshi #401 Sazabi — The Chibi Red Comet at His Finest
The SD BB Senshi series is pure joy, and the Sazabi might be its greatest achievement. Everything that makes the full-scale Sazabi intimidating — the bulk, the funnels, the crimson color — is here in chibi form, and somehow it works perfectly.
Chibi Engineering
For a budget kit, the BB Senshi Sazabi is remarkably well-engineered. The funnels deploy from the backpack, the shield has functional storage, and the color separation minimizes sticker use. A perfect desk kit.
SD BB Sazabi: The Chibi Ace Suit
SD BB Senshi (Super-Deformed BB Warriors) is one of Bandai's oldest chibi-format lines, dating back to the late 1980s. The SD BB Sazabi is one of the line's iconic releases — Char's final flagship rendered in the squat, anime-cute proportions that define the format.
Despite the chibi proportions, the kit captures the Sazabi's signature design elements: the funnels on the shoulder, the imposing chest, the V-fin head, the red color scheme.
The BB Senshi Format
BB Senshi kits don't have standard articulation. Most joints are fixed or single-axis. The format prioritizes character expression over poseability — you build, you display, you don't action-pose.
The trade-off: BB Senshi kits build extremely quickly (under 1 hour), include all needed paint detail without painting, and look correct in the cute style.
The Color Scheme
Iconic Sazabi red with gold trim. The red plastic is bright and slightly metallic. The gold is painted (not plated) but acceptable for the price point. The eye sticker captures the menacing mono-eye stare.
Builders typically apply a panel-line marker to add depth, but otherwise no paint work is required.
The Funnel Detail
The funnels mount on the shoulder armor as detachable pieces. They're chibi-scaled but recognizable. The kit doesn't include deployment effects — the funnels stay mounted on the shoulders for static display.
Who Buys This Kit
Three audiences: SD collectors who buy every BB release, casual builders who want a quick afternoon project, and parents looking for their child's first Gunpla. The build is simple enough for ages 8+.
Display in SD Context
SD figures need company. A single SD on a shelf full of HG/MG kits looks adrift. Group SD figures together — an SD Char's Zaku, SD Sazabi, and SD Nu Gundam create an excellent UC-themed SD shelf.
