EG 1/144 Gundam G40 (Industrial Design Ver.) — Future Aesthetic

The G40 Industrial Design Ver. gives the classic RX-78-2 a striking angular redesign that looks like something out of a near-future concept studio. Unique within the EG lineup.

EG G40: The Industrial Designer's Take

The EG G40 (Industrial Design Ver.) is Bandai's collaboration with industrial designer Ken Okuyama on a reimagined RX-78. The 'G40' refers to the 40th anniversary of Gundam (released in 2020 to mark the show's 1979 debut). The G40 design takes the RX-78 silhouette and applies modern industrial-design language: cleaner lines, simplified surface details, and a more 'realistic vehicle' aesthetic.

For collectors who want a different take on the RX-78, the G40 is essential. It's not a replacement for the standard RX-78; it's a parallel interpretation.

What the Industrial Design Looks Like

Smoother panel transitions. Less mechanical detail per surface area. Simplified joints visible at the surface. A more 'engineered product' aesthetic versus the show's 'Bandai mecha' style.

The face is the most striking change — the V-fin is sharper, the eye sockets are deeper, the chin is more pronounced. The silhouette reads as 'updated for 2020' while remaining recognizably RX-78.

The Color Scheme

White with blue accents and a gray inner frame. The G40 uses a more muted palette than the standard RX-78 — the red is softer, the blue is more navy. This contributes to the 'industrial' aesthetic; less primary-color contrast.

Articulation

Standard Entry Grade articulation. Ball-jointed shoulders, single-hinge elbows, hip ball joints, ankle articulation. Sufficient for static and basic action poses.

The G40's pose vocabulary tends toward grounded, weighted poses rather than dynamic flying. This suits the design language well.

Build Time

Approximately 90-120 minutes. Similar to other EG kits. The build is straightforward; nothing unusual.

Why This Kit Stands Out

It demonstrates that the RX-78 silhouette has range. The standard EG RX-78 is the show-accurate representation. The G40 is the 'updated for 2020' representation. Side-by-side, they're clearly the same character but executed in different design languages.

For builders curious about industrial design or product aesthetics, this kit is genuinely interesting beyond just being another Gundam.
